Wonderful pictures of Scutellinia (and Humaria ).
We will wait for your determination but it's interesting to make some hypothesis :
sp1: on wood + long hairs + alternation of 700 µm hairs with some 1300-1500 µm probably. It's probably around S. crinita.
sp2 : very interesting, on wood, hairs densely when young and more dispersed when mature, large apothecia, paler below, and medium length hairs. Perhaps around S. olivascens or a species with great interest.
These are only speculations but I try to recognize some macro criteria to characterize species before microscopic studies (I often make mistakes ) but I'm interesting by your microscopic determination to compare with my hypothesis.
Read you later,

Bravo ciao ......................Evelina

Hi Benat,Stinkhorn ha scritto:Scutellinia crinita
I labeled this collection Scutellinia critina.
Tha main reasons are:
Some marginal long hairs >1000 µm, with root-like base.
The shorter hairs show 1-3forcate base
Spore size on average 18 × 11 µm, with small warts sometimes merged and/or linked by very thin ridges
That's all for the moment!
Take a look to the bad above micro-photos!
Best wishes
Read you soon!
Matte
P.S. chiaramente per chi del forum non capisse me lo dica che aggiungo la versione italiana!

Re: Giretto veloce nell'entroterra ligure...
Talking about the 2nd collection (see above) I'm convinced that it could be S. subhirtella fro these reasons:
- Marginal hairs up to 900 µm but on average shorter.
- 1-2-(3) forcate base.
- spores on average 20-21 µm long and with rounded warts, isolated (even if not in all spores because I found a very very small cyanophilous ridges interconnecting them), up to 1.5 µm wide and up to 1 µm high.
What do you think about?
Matte
P.S. I read that (in Schumacher) Kullman probably listed S. olivascens under this name. So your speculation is not so bad!

In my mind (this is only my opinion, I'm not an expert, I'm just fascinated by Scutellinia), I'm agree with your determinations :
sp1 : no problem, typical S. crinita
sp2 : ok for S. subhirtella in my sense. I'm totally agree with you on this collection. But it's a species with blurred borders. I have seen some collections of subhirtella or umbrorum, determinated by Schumacher or Kullman, and it's difficult to understand their choices. So, when I finish work on many other species (I don't know when ! ), I'll take time to study this complex of species with isolated warts.
But, in my sense, your collection is not umbrarum (slightly prominent warts), not patagonica ( your spores are too ellipsoid), not parvispora (hairs), not nigrohirtula (hairs), not pseudoumbrarum (hairs), so we just have S. subhirtella. Moreover, on rotten wood...
For the coincidence, I have collected S. crinita and subhirtella too, two days ago.
Grazie mille, Matte
Beñat
PS : I'll take more time later to see you other posts.

Thanks a lot for your opinions!
I agree with you that the complex around S. umbrorum should be investigated more in depth!
Don't worry and take your time!
Grazie a tutti per i complimenti!

Yes, you're right! But the wood was half buried in the soil in a "dry" bed of a brooke! And there were others apothecia on soil, but I photographed those on the wood cause they were more photogenics!Beñat ha scritto:Moreover, on rotten wood...
Anyway...
I'm almost ready to ship some miscellaneus collections to MCVE Herbarium, but beore doing so I must know if you're interested in these two. Please, just let me know as soon as you can!

I misspoke, and your details are appropriate. What I meant : S. subhirtella is almost the only species in complex "umbrarum" which are coming on wood. You can see Schumacher: "Deeply is quite exceptionnally decayed wood". So, I think that's good. Especially when there are others around on the ground.
For collections, you can send them to MCVE.
These letters remind me Giovanni Robich, a very likable man. Convey my greetings to him.
Read you later with pleasure,
